The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/48-8A (isolated) is a professional DC‑DC charger designed to charge a 48V leisure/auxiliary battery bank from a vehicle’s 12V alternator. It’s a great choice for mobile charging on 48V systems—including ice cream vans, mobile catering setups, and high-powered 48V van-life builds—where dependable charging on the move really matters.
It’s compatible with smart alternators (Euro 5 vehicles and newer) and includes built-in Bluetooth, so you can monitor performance and adjust settings in the VictronConnect app. Charging is suitable for all common battery chemistries, including lead-acid (wet, Gel, AGM) and lithium, with a fully adjustable charge profile so you can match the battery manufacturer’s recommended voltages.
Why choose the isolated version?
This model features galvanic isolation with separate negative connections for the starter and auxiliary sides. You’ll typically want the isolated unit when your starter and leisure batteries don’t share a common negative, or when your installation benefits from keeping the two circuits electrically separated. It can still be used in systems with a shared negative, but the isolation feature won’t be essential in that case.
Charger mode or converter mode
The Orion-Tr Smart can be configured either as:
- A fully adjustable battery charger using an adaptive 3‑stage charging algorithm, or
- A fixed-voltage DC‑DC converter
The adaptive algorithm automatically adjusts absorption time for lead-acid batteries based on depth of discharge—reducing absorption time after lighter discharges to help prevent overcharging.
Simple installation
Unlike many DC‑DC chargers that need a hard-wired ignition or alternator signal, the Orion Smart uses software-based engine-on detection. This is configurable in the VictronConnect app and can help keep wiring simpler and cleaner.
Temperature performance
Built to handle demanding environments, it operates in ambient temperatures up to 55°C, delivering full rated output up to 40°C.
